Challenging Narratives

A little beacon of hope to everyone. Not only will this be an incredibly short post, based on life circumstances and my own inadequate planning, but there is reason for real hope.

We recently rewatched Jurassic Park during a family movie binge, and I loved the parallels. An egotistic, wealthy investor believes that with the right switches and control mechanisms, that he can control populations. Despite his ego, he does fund a grand advance and attempts to capitalize on it. Most would think this is a parallel to some robber baron in the past. Perhaps the advance part is an accurate parallel of that, but the intent to control and manage and then capitalize on it, is a pure parallel to politics…not markets.

No matter how dark most of the world seems to be around us, we must always realize that on the whole, actual progress has been made. I don’t mean the sort of progress politicians promise us. I mean real, tangible advances in quality of life.

As federal programs have expanded into nearly every aspect of our lives, the metrics like safety, production capacity, medical treatments and procedures, social awareness, or the seemingly infinite number of other factors which we embrace and understand as valuable have slowed, but persistently improve.

In a shortened time period, there are numerous examples of industry failures and collapse. Jobs are lost and people suffer. Those are not to be ignored. What should be noted, however, is that a macroscopic level overview of history will show you that the general trajectory in every facet of human life is improving.

So take heed. No matter how dire you think the circumstances are, it used to be way worse, and all indications are that it will continue to improve.

In spite of politicians attempting to exploit all of our advances.

Freedom, innovation and the advancement of humanity are part of life, and as Dr. Ian Malcolm so eloquently stated in Jurassic Park, “I’m simply saying that life, uh… finds a way.” He also pointed out all of the issues with trying to “control” or “manage” life. In the end, after lots of death and destruction of egos, life still found a way. So will freedom, innovation, and advancement.

Just don’t get in the way.

They’re classics…all of them. Don’t @ me. Get your copies of the entire Jurassic Park Series before the next one comes out!
