Challenging Narratives

Comically, everything I thought I should question about my opposition to the renewable energy movement was laid to rest by a documentary by non other than a couple leftists making a documentary to look into supposed green energy.

I never should have questioned the actual intellectuals I read regarding the matter. I owe the dozens of them an apology.

As it is, this documentary falls short on one important factor in that it blames capitalism. The reality is that capitalism would be seeking a profit, and without the massive government subsidies, in both the form of direct payments from government, or the regulations that offer tax incentives or that penalize other energy producers, this “green energy” would likely have been ignored for other sources of fuel.

Mr. Moore’s real problem is with cronyism or government, but although he was able to look beyond his bias to note that green energy really isn’t “green,” he still fails to see that our “capitalism” isn’t really a free market at all. In fact, in the absence of government intervention in the form of carbon regulations, fuel efficiency requirements, and renewable subsidies, none of this monstrosity would have existed.

So he not only misdiagnoses the problem, he even calls for more of the same which caused the problem.

Also, he mistakenly lists humans as the problem as well remarking that it is “everything we are doing.” Really, it is only one thing. We allow our governments to tax, subsidize, regulate and criminalize behavior, picking winners and losers and ultimately allowing bad industries to be profitable…like green energy.

I have hopes for Mr. Moore to eventually see the whole truth, and not just part of it, but his work to undermine the renewable energy movement is still solid work and worth the time to absorb.

Watch for yourself:

The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels by Alex Epstein does a decent job of undermining the case for renewables as well, if only by making a better case for fossil fuels.
